Importance of Pelvic Floor Exercises

Importance of Pelvic Floor Exercises

Every woman, after giving birth, would surely feel a difference in their pelvic floor area. During this time, the pelvic floor has the tendency to weaken because of the trauma that it experiences and the need to stretch out for the baby to come out. To bring it back to its normal function, pelvic floor exercises would be needed.

First off, what is pelvic floor and what are its functions? The pelvic floor is the section that crosses from one’s pubic bone up to the base of the spine. It holds the bladder and urethra in place. Also, the pelvic floor muscle helps in the functions of the anus, vagina, and urethra. During urination, this muscle relaxes so that the urine can come out easily. When this section is damaged or weakened, the proper functions of the said organs (anus, urethra, and most importantly, the bladder) will be affected.

This leads to what we call as stress incontinence. This kind of problem is associated with a person’s problem in urinating. A person with this kind of problem would experience leaking out of urine when laughing, coughing, or sneezing. Also, it has been said that 25% of new moms would suffer from this problem because the pelvic floor muscles are greatly affected after giving birth. In addition, when problems in the pelvic floor muscle are experienced, lesser satisfaction during intercourse can also be felt.

Though incontinence can be quite a bothering and embarrassing condition, there is nothing to worry about it anymore. This condition can already be resolved through the help of pelvic floor exercises. Through this, the pelvic floor muscle can be conditioned to go back to its normal condition and function. The effects of the exercise may take some time but, when done regularly and appropriate, the changes would bring a lot of benefits to an individual.

The benefit of this exercise form is that it does not require too much effort on the part of the individual. Because of this, one can perform the exercise as often as she can. At the same time, it would not require equipments making it convenient to do it anytime and anywhere an individual wants it. Above all, the exercises can be done even while doing other mild activities.

Even more, there are already some studies that support the efficacy of this form of exercises for men. If done properly and regularly, men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction and incontinence can also feel a drastic change.
