Eat the Right Foods for Healthy Skin

Eat the Right Foods for Healthy Skin

Topical skin care products are a billion dollar history. Even though some of them can be helpful (and in the case of some skin conditions very necessary), eating the right foods and providing yourself with the correct nutrients are the foundation for building healthy skin from the inside out.

The types of fat we eat are a major factor in producing healthy glowing skin. Hydrogenated fats (chemically altered fats), and saturated fats are not well received by the skin. Ice cream, many margarines, excessive red meat intake, high fat dairy products, fast food, deep fried foods are all bad news for your complexion and basic skin health. The fats that your skin needs to be healthy and happy are mono-unsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. These fats are needed to produce healthy membranes in the skin. Oily fish, extra virgin olive oil, dark leafy greens like kale and spinach, avocados and cod liver oil are all good sources of these healthy fats.

Eating more alkaline based foods is also great way to achieve healthy clear skin. Many of the skin eruptions and rashes that occur on the skin need an acidic environment to exist at all. The only food group in which almost every member is alkaline in nature is vegetables. Eating lots of vegetables every day and incorporating them into every meal can go a long way to helping keep the overall acidity of your body down.

Blackberries may be one of the healthiest skin friendly fruits around. They contain a whole host of antioxidant phytochemicals that protect the outer layers of our skin from the damage inflicted by air-borne free radicals. Blackberries are also a great source of vitamins A, C and E. Vitamin A is essential for building and maintaining epithelial skin cells. Vitamin C is essential for building healthy collagen to keep the skin nice and firm. Vitamin E helps protect the skin from UV light.

Juicing can be a great help. Juicing fresh blackberries will provide you with an intensely concentrated abundance of this fruits antioxidants. Making green juices and vegetables juices is also another way to get a great supply of antioxidants in the diet, plus they are very alkalizing.
